We have just completed our “Celebration of Vision” event where our new Board Chair Shelley Cannon, and our Chamber Directors completed their oaths.
As we look to guide the Chamber through the next year of operations, the focus on vision is critically important as our community and region look to plan ahead. Planning ahead means creating strategies to successfully deal with the city’s infrastructure issues and capital planning needs, and preparing for the overall growth that everyone is expecting.
In order for the Chamber to be able to address future planning, we must be informed and engage in opportunities to meet with various groups and organizations to gain new perspectives. Our Chamber networks are an excellent source of information.
Very recently, the Chamber participated in a P3 Summit hosted by the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce. The P3 Summit saw over 375 delegates attend, some from as far away as the US and France. The Summit provided many insights into past P3 Projects and provided details on the components of successful P3s. A summary of the P3 model is best described in a quote from John McBride – CEO CPP Canada.
“P3s transfer risk from taxpayers to the private sector- the risk of cost overruns, time delays and quality product. To ensure this risk is truly transferred, the public sector pays only on performance over the life of the infrastruture. This requires the private sector to raise and invest significant amounts of capital. Having ‘skin in the game’ creates strong incentives for good performance and adds the discipline of oversight to the lenders”
Overall P3s can be an effective mechanism to plan, finance, build and maintain future projects or assets. In order to be successful, they must offer value to all parties involved.
As we move deeper into fall, the Chamber will be offering many opportunities to join us at luncheons, such as the upcoming luncheon featuring the Saskatchewan Roughriders, or opportunities to join us in round table discussions. We look forward to your participation and the insights you bring.
